Polpo, Italian for Octopus, is the second in Salty's foodie series.
The image evolved from a Venice trip sketchbook - the abundance of casual delicious snacks couldn't be ignored. What is always striking in Italy (or pretty much most other European countries) is what would be considered a fine dining dish or artisanal in Britain is readily available and affordable without pomp!
A long standing champion of good affordable food, Salty's presents the Polpo on a plain chopping board, framed by newspaper - to almost fish and chippify the dish. The glass of wine and the sea horizon elevates us into a holiday mode, it must be al fresco but then the ubiquitous plastic fork brings us back down to cafe convenience.
We long for this affordable, delicious casual dining. Time to book that holiday perhaps!
